Across the wider Tongariro region and surrounding districts, anglers can enjoy excellent fishing in every season. During the cooler months, many rivers experience strong runs of rainbow trout, while spring and summer provide outstanding opportunities to target resident brown trout using nymphs, dry flies and sight-fishing techniques. High-country lakes also provide excellent stillwater fishing, while changing seasons ensure every trip offers a different experience.
Operating from Taupō, we regularly guide throughout the Tongariro region, Ruapehu, King Country, South Waikato, Rotorua, Eastern Bay of Plenty, Rangitīkei and Hawke’s Bay. Backcountry Fisheries
Within 60–90 minutes of Taupō, an extensive network of accessible backcountry rivers offers some of the Central North Island’s most rewarding fly fishing. These fisheries combine exceptional trout fishing with spectacular scenery, providing a genuine wilderness atmosphere while remaining easily accessible for day trips or multi-day tours.
From spring through autumn, these rivers come alive with actively feeding trout, creating excellent opportunities for nymphing, dry fly fishing and dry-dropper techniques. During January and February, the annual cicada season produces some of the finest dry fly fishing of the year, with trout confidently rising to large terrestrial patterns in crystal-clear water.
Many backcountry rivers can be comfortably enjoyed as full-day trips, while others are best explored over several days, allowing you to experience a variety of waters while taking advantage of changing weather, river conditions and seasonal hatches.
With detailed knowledge of these fisheries, we tailor every trip to suit the prevailing conditions, your angling experience and the type of adventure you are seeking, ensuring you spend more time fishing and less time travelling between locations.

Fishing Seasons

Spring | September-November
Spring marks the beginning of the new trout fishing season, with 1 October signalling the reopening of many rivers, streams and lakes throughout the Central North Island. Rising water temperatures and increasing insect activity make this one of the most exciting times of the year to be on the water.
Early spring is an excellent time to fish smaller tributaries before water levels begin to fall and trout disperse throughout larger river systems. Nymph fishing is particularly productive, while warming afternoons often bring reliable mayfly hatches and the first opportunities for dry fly fishing.
As spring progresses, lakes begin to warm, trout become increasingly active and stillwater fishing improves dramatically. Spring also offers quieter rivers, fewer anglers and some of the year’s most spectacular scenery, making it an ideal time for both single-day trips and multi-day tours.

Summer | December-February
Summer offers long days, settled weather and some of the finest fly fishing of the year. Rivers, lakes and backcountry fisheries all fish exceptionally well as insect life reaches its peak and trout feed actively throughout the day.
Mayflies, caddis and terrestrial insects become increasingly important, with the annual cicada season during January and February producing spectacular dry fly fishing across many Central North Island rivers. Stable river flows and exceptional water clarity also create excellent opportunities for sight fishing, while warm evenings often provide memorable surface action.
Summer is the premier season for exploring backcountry and wilderness fisheries. Favourable weather conditions make it an ideal time for helicopter day trips, multi-day camping adventures, backcountry hut stays and drive-in wilderness lodge tours, allowing anglers to experience some of New Zealand’s most spectacular and remote landscapes.

Autumn | March-May
Many experienced anglers consider autumn to be the finest and most diverse fly fishing season of the year. Cooling temperatures stimulate increased feeding activity as trout prepare for spawning, creating outstanding opportunities across rivers, lakes and stream mouths.
Resident trout are often at their best after a summer of abundant food, while spawning migrations begin to gather momentum. Autumn mayfly and midge hatches continue to provide excellent dry fly fishing, although nymphs and larger streamer patterns become increasingly effective as fish move into deeper water and begin concentrating in spawning catchments.
With a wide variety of fisheries still open and fish feeding aggressively before winter, autumn offers perhaps the greatest range of fly fishing opportunities during the year. It is an outstanding season for both single-day trips and extended multi-day tours, with changing autumn colours providing a spectacular backdrop to every adventure.

Winter | June-August
Winter transforms the Central North Island into one of New Zealand’s premier destinations for wild trout fishing. Fresh-run fish enter spawning rivers throughout the season, creating exciting opportunities for anglers targeting powerful trout in classic winter conditions.
Higher river flows and colder water generally favour heavier nymphs, larger streamer patterns and deeper presentations. Success often comes from carefully selecting river conditions, particularly as waterways begin to clear after freshes, while early starts are frequently rewarded before other anglers arrive.
Although many backcountry rivers close during winter to protect spawning fish, numerous outstanding fisheries remain open, ensuring exceptional fishing throughout the season. Crisp mornings, snow-capped mountains and fewer anglers combine to create a unique atmosphere, making winter an unforgettable time for both productive day trips and relaxed multi-day tours.
